Colonnade of St. Isaac's

The Colonnade of St. Isaac’s Cathedral is a hugely popular spot for tourists in St. Petersburg. With a height of 43 meters, it is possible to survey the entire center of the northern capital of Russia. Traditionally, the journey to the top of the cathedral is whopping 526 steps, but this will all change with a twelve person maximum elevator that will be installed. The restoration of St. Isaac's Cathedral, which lasted nearly a year and a half, is already in the advanced stage, and is soon to be finished.

Steve Jobs

On October 5th, citizens of St. Petersburg hosted a rally in memory of the anniversary of the late Steve Jobs from Apple. The supporters came with notes with new ideas written on them for Steve Jobs, a symbolic gesture that showed how much this one person changed everyone’s life in terms of technology and new thinking. There were over 510 kilograms of apples that were given out to those who left a note.

The end of the fountain season

St-Petersburg Fountains

The end of the fountain season has dawned on St-Petersburg. The first fountain that was turned off was the one at Sestroetsk. The last fountain to be turned off is near the Kazan Cathedral on Nevsky Prospect and this will happen on October 29th. Once all the fountains are off, they will be checked to see if any of them need repairing. Last year the closing was especially difficult for the city workers, as hooligans would often damage the fountains with paint or foam.

A new law in St. Petersburg may fine people for having “loud sex”, “the sound of loud cats”, and “snoring at night.” The Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg has decided to amend the law of “Administrative Offences in St. Petersburg”, which refers to the violation of silence at night. Even if you are caught singing, yelling, and playing musical instruments at night, you can receive a fine.

Sobaka Ulybaka

On October 7th, there will be a great celebration for dogs all around St. Petersburg called “sobaka ulybaka” (English: "Smiley dog".) The event features the four-legged friends of ours dressed up in unusual costumes and other great events in this carnival. Accompanied by music and dance show support groups, pet owners dress up their dogs in banana suits, bees, dragons, Red Riding Hood, James Bond, Shrek, cake and others. Anyone can take part in the contest for the funniest costume for dogs. Authors of the best costumes will be awarded a nice prize. The costume and theme of this event is for the dogs and those who love dogs. There are no losers, only winners.

Sredny Prospect, Vasilievsky Island

By 2016, the Sredniy Prospect on Vasilevsky Island might become a new pedestrian zone. The plans for the street include the widening of sidewalks and leaving only two lanes for public transport. Cars will not be able to travel on the street at all. The project will develop starting in 2013. Now the program is just beginning with Vasilevsky Island, but it could be possible that Nevsky Prospect will also be a pedestrian street by 2020, eliminating all the noise of cars and buses.

Outdoor circus show

On September 22nd, the Race Horse Company from Finland will be having a show at the Peter and Paul Fortress. The show is called the Rusty Road Circus. The entrance is free and it will start at 12:00 in the area in front of the Tsar bastion. The festival is called the “Contemporary Art in Traditional Museum.” First in the courtyard enters an old van and the dynamic road circus show begins. Acrobats jump out of the van and begin a wild show around the whole area.
