Meteor Showers 2013

Autumn is the season not only for gold leafs and romance, but also a season of a charming and mysterious natural phenomena - stargazing. From October to November, there expected to be as many as five meteor showers. Here is a list of the best chances to see one this fall:

  • Draconid

Drakonids is best seen in the northern hemisphere. Unlike other meteor showers, this one is best seen at night, rather than in the morning. In most cases, the meteor shower is not very intense, but sometimes one can see several at one in which the sky can appear several hundred meteors per hour. The moon should not interfere with observations; so try to consider Draconid a great meteor shower to see on October 7th until October 8th.

Date: October 7

  • Orionids

This meteor shower is best observed before dawn, but in 2013, a bright moon may prevent it. And yet, in spite of the usual maximum of 10-20 meteors per hour, the shower is quite possible to be seen even in the moonlight. To predict the maximum duration of this rain is not possible, so it pays to watch from midnight to dawn a few days before and a few days after October 21. Most likely, will be the most spectacular pre-dawn hours of October 21.

Date: October 21

  • Southern Taurid

The streams that feed the showers of the southern and northern Taurid is quite scattered, which means a longer duration of the shower - it happen from September 25 to November 25. But for the same reasons you can only see up to 7 meteors per hour. Southern Taurid has a maximum flow in which can be expected during the night of November 4th and 5th, especially after midnight. Despite the small amount of meteors, this meteor shower should be a good one.

Date: November 4-5

  • Northern Taurid

This shower will happen from October 12 to December 2, but even during the peak there will be around 7 meteors an hour. The maximum amount is expected after midnight on November 12.

Date: November 11-12

  • Leonids

Unfortunately, the full moon will prevent people from enjoying the magnificent sight of the meteor shower in 2013. It should be noted that generally the Leonids is the most spectacular meteor shower during the year. In 1966, the meteors were really like rain, because in 15 minutes you could see up to several thousand meteors per minute. Maximum flow this year is expected closer to 17 on the morning of November 18.

Date: November 16-18
